If you have ever transferred photos from a modern iPhone to a Windows PC or tried to upload them to a website, you have likely run into the .heic file extension.
HEIC stands for High-Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's proprietary version of the HEIF (High-Efficiency Image File) standard.
Apple made HEIC the default photo format for iOS starting in 2017 with iOS 11.
Why Did Apple Switch to HEIC?
For decades, JPG was the absolute standard for digital photography. So why did Apple decide to change the default format for hundreds of millions of iPhone users?
It comes down to a fundamental limitation of the iPhone: Storage Space.
As iPhone cameras improved, the file sizes of the photos grew exponentially. A single high-quality photo could easily take up 5 MB to 8 MB as a JPG. For a user taking thousands of photos, 64 GB or 128 GB of local storage would fill up incredibly fast.
The HEIC Advantage
The HEIC format uses advanced compression algorithms (based on HEVC video compression).
A HEIC file is typically about 50% smaller than a JPG file of the exact same quality.
By switching to HEIC, Apple effectively doubled the number of photos a user could store on their iPhone or in iCloud, without sacrificing any image quality.
Additional Features of HEIC
Beyond saving space, the HEIC container can do things that JPG cannot:
- Store Multiple Images: A single HEIC file can hold a sequence of images. This is the technology that makes Apple's "Live Photos" (where a photo captures a few seconds of motion) possible.
- Support Transparency: Like PNG, HEIC supports transparent backgrounds.
- Store Edits Non-Destructively: HEIC can store image edits (like crop or rotation) separately from the original image data, meaning you can always revert to the original photo.
The Big Problem: Compatibility
The downside to HEIC is that it is not universally supported.
While the Apple ecosystem (macOS, iOS, iPadOS) handles HEIC natively, opening a HEIC file on a Windows computer, an older Android device, or uploading it to a web portal often results in an error.
Many websites and older software simply do not recognize the format.
How to Open and Convert HEIC Files
On Windows 10 & 11
Windows does not support HEIC out of the box. You must download the "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store to view them in the native Photos app.
The Easiest Solution: Convert to JPG
If you need to share a HEIC photo with someone not using an Apple device, or upload it to a website, you should convert it to JPG first.

Stop Your iPhone from Using HEIC
If you find the compatibility issues too frustrating, you can force your iPhone to save photos as traditional JPGs:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Go to Camera > Formats.
- Select Most Compatible (instead of High Efficiency).
Note: Choosing 'Most Compatible' means your photos will take up significantly more storage space on your device.
