If you have ever sent a photo from your iPhone to a Windows PC or Android device and found it would not open, you have experienced the HEIC compatibility problem. Here is how to convert HEIC photos to the universally supported JPG format.
What is HEIC?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, introduced in iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra.
The main advantage of HEIC over JPG is file size: a HEIC photo is typically 50% smaller than the equivalent JPG at the same visual quality. This is why iPhones save photos in HEIC by default — it preserves more photos in the same storage space.
The problem is that HEIC is not universally supported. Windows 10 and 11 require a codec install to open HEIC natively. Most web services, photo editors, and non-Apple applications still expect JPG or PNG.

Batch Converting Multiple HEIC Files

Preventing HEIC in the Future
If you always want JPG from your iPhone:
On iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible
This saves photos as JPG at the cost of more storage per photo. The trade-off is worth it if you regularly share photos with non-Apple users.
On AirDrop: When you AirDrop an HEIC photo to a Mac, it stays as HEIC. When you AirDrop to a PC via Bluetooth or email it, iOS automatically converts to JPG if "Automatic" is selected in Settings → Camera → Formats.
About HEIC and Social Media
Most major platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, Facebook) accept HEIC uploads from iOS and convert them server-side. However, if you are uploading to a website or service that does not handle HEIC, you will need to convert first.
