A PDF that displays sideways or upside down is one of the most common formatting problems. It usually happens with scanned documents or PDFs exported from spreadsheets and wide presentations. Here is how to fix it.
Why PDFs Open in the Wrong Orientation
- Scanned documents: Pages were placed on the scanner sideways or upside down
- Spreadsheets: Wide Excel sheets exported to PDF are often landscape by default
- Photos to PDF: A portrait photo rotated in camera metadata may convert with incorrect orientation
- Merged PDFs: Combining files with different orientations produces a mixed-orientation document
How to Rotate a PDF
- Go to Rotate PDF
- Upload your PDF
- Select which pages to rotate:
- All pages — if the entire document is in the wrong orientation
- Specific pages — if only some pages need rotation
- Choose the rotation: 90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise, or 180°
- Click Rotate and download the corrected PDF
The rotation is permanent — the file is saved with the new orientation so it opens correctly in any viewer.
Choosing the Right Rotation
| Page appears as | Apply rotation | |---|---| | Sideways (text reads left to right, page top is at left) | 90° clockwise | | Sideways (text reads right to left, page top is at right) | 90° counter-clockwise | | Upside down | 180° |
If you are unsure, rotate 90° clockwise and preview the result. If it is not correct, try 90° counter-clockwise.
Rotating Specific Pages in a Mixed-Orientation PDF
When you have a document with some pages in portrait and some in landscape (common in reports with wide appendices), rotate only the specific pages that need adjustment:
- Upload to Rotate PDF
- Identify which page numbers are incorrectly oriented (open in any PDF viewer and note the page numbers)
- Enter those page numbers in the rotation tool's page selector
- Rotate only those pages
This preserves the existing orientation of all other pages.
After Rotating
- Verify in a viewer: Open the downloaded PDF in your browser to confirm the rotation looks correct at 100% zoom
- Check all pages: If you rotated specific pages, scroll through to confirm the surrounding pages are unaffected
- Re-merge if needed: If the PDF was already merged from multiple sources, re-rotate as needed and re-merge
