If you have received a password-protected PDF and you know the password, you can remove the protection to create an unrestricted copy. This is useful when you need to convert, merge, compress, or otherwise process a protected PDF.

What You Need
To unlock a PDF, you must know the password. There is no legitimate way to bypass a strong password on a properly encrypted PDF without it.
If you set the password yourself and have forgotten it, your options are limited. Check:
- Password managers you use
- Email threads where you might have communicated the password
- Notes or documentation where you recorded it

Two Types of PDF Protection
Open password protection
The file cannot be opened without entering the password. When you enter the correct password in the unlock tool, the tool removes this requirement from the output.
Permissions restrictions
The file opens without a password but has restricted operations (no printing, no copying, no editing). Some PDFs have only this type of restriction with no open password. Unlock PDF tools can also remove these permission restrictions.
Understanding PDF Permission Restrictions
Even if a PDF opens freely, it may have hidden restrictions set by the original creator:
